Staying Active, Staying Connected: Life at Mentor Hills Post Acute

What’s your favorite way to spend an open afternoon? Maybe you like playing card games. Maybe you like doing arts and crafts. Maybe you just like to plop down on the couch and watch a movie (or two, or three). While recovering from an injury, illness, or surgery, it can be easy to feel like you won’t be able to enjoy these free-time activities while you go through the recovery process, but that’s not the case at Mentor Hills Post Acute!

Recovery doesn’t mean you have to put your life on pause. At Mentor Hills, we believe that healing takes more than just medical care on its own. Healing requires recovery and rehabilitation, but it’s also about joy, connection, and staying engaged with the world around you. That’s why we proudly offer a robust 40-hour/week activities program, along with multiple outings each month, designed to support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our residents.

Our activities program runs throughout the week and offers something for everyone, no matter their interests or abilities. From creative arts and music to games, group discussions, fitness-focused activities, and special events like chili cook-offs and Elvis impersonators, residents are encouraged to participate at their own pace and comfort level. Whether someone prefers a lively group setting or a quieter, more relaxed activity, our schedule is built to provide meaningful options all day, every day.

In addition to our in-house programming, Mentor Hills Post Acute also organizes several off-site outings each month. These outings give residents the opportunity to enjoy the broader community, change scenery, and maintain a sense of independence and normalcy. Trips may include local restaurants, shopping centers, seasonal events, or scenic drives. These simple experiences can make a big difference in morale and outlook. Getting out of the building, even briefly, helps residents feel connected to life beyond recovery and reminds them that there’s still plenty to look forward to.

Activities Matter in Post Acute Care

At first glance, engaging in activities and having fun during recovery may seem secondary, but in reality, they play a crucial role in the healing process. Post acute care can be physically demanding and emotionally challenging, especially for individuals adjusting to short-term limitations or long-term changes. Activities redirect a resident’s focus from stress, pain, or frustration to happiness, enjoyment, and fun. These feelings help residents focus on what they can do rather than what they can’t.

Participating in activities supports cognitive health, reduces feelings of isolation, and improves overall mood. Social interaction, laughter, and creative expression all contribute to emotional well-being, which in turn can positively influence physical recovery. When residents are engaged and enjoying themselves, they’re often more motivated to participate in therapy, maintain routines, and work toward their rehabilitation goals.

Just as importantly, activities help foster a sense of community. Recovery can feel lonely, so shared experiences, like a group game, a themed event, or an outing can create important opportunities for connection and friendship. At Mentor Hills Post Acute, we see these connections forming every day, and we know how valuable they are to our residents’ quality of life.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Our 40-hour activity program reflects our commitment to treating the whole person, not just their medical needs. By offering consistent opportunities for fun, engagement, and socialization, we help residents maintain a sense of identity and purpose while they heal. Recovery looks different for everyone, and our activities team works closely with residents to ensure programming remains inclusive, adaptable, and enjoyable.

At Mentor Hills Post Acute, healing doesn’t happen in isolation. Through thoughtful programming, regular outings, and a focus on joy as well as care, we strive to make every resident’s recovery as fulfilling and supportive as possible. Because even during recovery, you should be able to live your life to the fullest.
